How to apply for funding or scholarships.

We are very happy to make or help with applications for research funding, through JSPS, or scholarships from Monbusho, for committed and enthusiastic researchers with a keen interest in our research, or those with a research idea that can be accomadated within our research group using our facilities. There are several steps that must be taken by those wishing to be considered for receiving our assistance in this process.

Monbusho.

Step 1. Review our publications and our available equipment.

Step 2. Check the "Study in Japan" web-site for your eligibility to apply.
There are two pathways to apply. One is via the Japanese Embassy within your own country. The other is for us to apply for you through our office.
Please note that for Monbusho scholarships to be considered when we apply for you through our office  then your university should have an established exchange link with Tohoku University. The deadlines are variable for both pathways, more so for the Embassy route. Generally for us to apply we should have an application in by the end of March.

Step 3. Contact us with a proposed area of study, based upon what you found interesting from our publications, or one which you feel that we can accomodate with our available equipment. Include a Resume / CV and publications list, and the name of someone that we can contact for references.

Centre Of Excellence (COE).
Tohoku University was designated a centre of excellence in the study and preparation of giant molecules and comlex systems. From time to time we can get funding for post doctoral positions as a result of this status. We will of course consider applicants for this funding whenever it becomes available. To apply via this channel:

Step 1. Review our publications and our available equipment.

Step 2. Check the COE website.

Step 3. Contact us with a proposed area of study, based upon what you found interesting from our publications, or one which you feel that we can accomodate with our available equipment.  Include a Resume / CV and publications list, and the name of someone that we can contact for references.

IGPAS / DIRECT.
Recently Tohoku University opened an "International Graduate Program for Advanced Science" (IGPAS) run from the "Division for International Research and Educational Cooperation" (DIRECT). IGPAS is a course leading to a masters degree or PhD. The official language of the course is English, so students must be capable of proving their English ability in some way. The most standard way is with a TOEIC or TOEFL score, however we will consider proposing exceptional students who were too busy in the Laboratory and publishing papers to have time to sit this course. In this case evidence for English ability may be of the form of a first name publication in an international Journal. A GRE subject or general score is also helpful. To apply to join IGPAS:

Step 1. Review our publications and our available equipment.

Step 2. Check the DIRECT website.

Step 3. Contact us with a proposed area of study, based upon what you found interesting from our publications, or one which you feel that we can accomodate with our available equipment.  Include a Resume / CV and publications list, and the name of someone that we can contact for references.

Note that IGPAS can get scholarships for 5 outstanding students each year via Monbusho. However the same restriction that your university needs to have an exchange link with Tohoku University can still apply.
